North Sea weather: Generally calm and some unsettled weather

Written by Sofia Rudenko | Mar 4, 2025 8:56:56 AM

High pressure remains over Southeast Europe, extending a ridge over the North Sea until the weekend. Several frontal troughs will occasionally move across the northern part of the North Sea. By the weekend, a trough will approach the North Sea from the southwest.

High pressure over Western Europe shifts southeast on Tuesday and lingers over Southeastern Europe afterward. The associated ridge extends across the entire North Sea, continuing into Friday. Weather conditions in the southern part of the North Sea will remain calm during this period, with winds staying below 20 knots and significant wave heights expected to remain under 2 meters.

Frontal troughs bringing unsettled weather

Meanwhile, low-pressure systems will move northeast across the northern Atlantic, with associated frontal troughs occasionally affecting the northern part of the North Sea, bringing unsettled weather to the central and northern areas. Specifically, on Wednesday at 00 UTC (see Figure 1), winds are expected to increase to 30-35 knots in the central and northern North Sea. Significant wave heights may also rise, reaching 3.5-4 meters in the central North Sea and up to 4.5-5 meters in the northern North Sea.

A secondary low on Friday

A secondary low will develop west of the Bay of Biscay on Friday and remain there afterward. The associated trough will extend toward the North Sea over the weekend but is not expected to bring any significant weather.

Overall, weather conditions will be generally favorable for offshore operations throughout the period. However, as frontal troughs pass over the northern North Sea, unsettled conditions may occur. Please review your weather forecast carefully and stay safe!
