North Sea weather: Generally calm weather with increasing winds and waves from Thursday along the Norwegian Coast

A secondary low-pressure system west of Ireland will move southeast and gradually dissipate on Wednesday. In its wake, a ridge of high pressure will extend across the North Sea. A weak frontal trough will pass over the United Kingdom and affect areas of the North Sea over the weekend. Watch our North Sea weather briefing in the video below. The text continues below the video.

Low pressure remains over the northern Atlantic, with a secondary low just west of Ireland on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a weak ridge over western Europe shifts southeast. The secondary low moves toward France by Wednesday afternoon, where it eventually dissipates. Light winds blowing from the shore bring foggy conditions to the southern North Sea on Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Winds strengthen along the southwestern coast of Norway

While a trough extends over Denmark and southern Scandinavia, a ridge begins to influence the North Sea from Thursday onward. Northerly to northwesterly winds strengthen along the southwestern coast of Norway, reaching speeds of 20–25 knots. As a result, significant wave heights may locally increase to around 3 meters. Elsewhere, the North Sea remains mostly calm (see Figure 1).

A separate high-pressure system is expected to develop over the Baltic Sea on Saturday, then shift southeast toward Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, another high builds over the Bay of Biscay on Sunday and shifts northeast, passing through the English Channel on Monday.

Overall, conditions remain generally calm across the entire North Sea throughout the period. However, stronger winds and increasing wave heights may affect the northwestern North Sea on Thursday and early Friday.
